Tanglefoot Ranch is a diverse family farm consisting of 950 acres.  We have row crops, a peach orchard, hi-tunnels, a beef cow herd and fresh water shrimp.  There is also an event center on the farm that is available to rent for weddings, family reunions, birthday parties and more.  The event center has a full kitchen and dining room/common area as well as an outdoor pavilion.  Tanglefoot Ranch is owned by Grover Webb, his wife Shirley and his brother Richard Webb.  The land has been in our family since 1946.

Grover Webb loves innovative ideas and creative projects and is always working on                                                            something new.  This makes life on the farm at Tanglefoot Ranch interesting and attractive to                                                    fellow farmers and consumers alike.

                                        Illinois Freshwater Prawns

Tanglefoot Ranch Prawns are a “Pope County Original” and offered

here on Tanglefoot Ranch! The Webb family has been raising

freshwater shrimp, also called prawns, on the farm in Southern

Illinois since 2000.  The State of Illinois Alternative Agricultural

Land Program enabled us to start a prawn enterprise. In 2001,

Grover helped start the ever popular Golconda Shrimp Festival in an

attempt to promote the city. For almost two decades prawns lovers

have been flocking to the Golconda Shrimp Festival for a shrimp fix or visiting Tanglefoot Ranch to buy frozen prawns.

Additionally, we operate a regional prawn nursery that helps supply local growers with pond stocking prawns. We also have six ¾ acre grow-out ponds.  To ensure our prawns are of the highest quality, they are closely monitored throughout the growing phase.  Each year, the ponds are filled with clean, aerated water from our adjacent reservoirs.   Juvenile prawns are moved from the nursery to these grow-out ponds at the end of May.  During the grow-out phase the water quality is checked daily and food is provided as required.  The prawns are harvested at the end of September/early October, weather permitting.  They are then processed in our State inspected facility which is located on site, and are available for purchase by contacting the farm.
